Micrographies; works on paper and panel

Ongoing projects draw upon the writings of philosophers and thinkers concerned with the creation of ideal social and/or artistic systems. Using lithography, pure pigments, wax and graphite on translucent papers, the pieces are formally “micrographies”: pictures that use text to create image. This technique is an ancient art form common to both Jewish and Muslim societies which traditionally share restrictions on the use of representative imagery in art.
For each piece a distinct text is illuminated as a comment on that text - e.g. the Castles in the Sky/Castles on the Sand series draws from Thomas More’s Utopia. It is my intention that these pieces be legible, but that the narrative be discontinuous.
